The Hyler Residence sits in the historic Hampstead Village, a neighborhood dating to 1769. Home to many working class residents, the site was occupied by a dilapidated Freedman's cottage, deemed to be historically significant and requiring rehabilitation and raising above flood plain. Using the existing volume as public spaces of the house, adding a vertical circulation core, and creating new construction within the remaining buildable area, the design maximized the 50% lot coverage, creating a 3 bedroom, 3 bath residence. A total of 1290 sf, the design captures the existing cottage footprint of 440 sf and expands in all directions.
