Claussen's Renovations

Claussen's

Columbia, South Carolina

Claussen's Bakery was built in 1928 and intended to establish the epicenter of the regional industrial chain, Claussen's Bakery. The exterior elevations were quintessential of the commercial architecture of that era, featuring sparse decorative adornment with few exceptions. The interior was constructed strictly for function with an open floor plan and high ceilings to accommodate the large scale bakery equipment and production. The bakery ceased operation in 1963, with the building then being converted into a local inn, which successfully operated from 1986 until 2015. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

Following the purchase of the building in 2018 by Styx Companies, the building's existing hotel rooms were converted into 29 studio and loft apartments. What started out to be a fairly simple cosmetic and accessibility upgrade, quickly became a much larger undertaking when some of the original elements were uncovered to reveal stunning character. Steel trusses, original wood framing, large windows, and exposed brick walls are all elements which have been restored and provide the backdrop for the apartment units. Modern-day amenities such as exercise room, co-work space, and a large central gathering area all compliment these unique living spaces. The Owner's were successfully able to secure both local and federal tax credits for the project.

Claussen's, once again, is an important anchor in the Five Points area of Columbia, which also received a National Register of Historic Places designation in 2019..
