Checkpoint Expansion

Every journey begins long before boarding the airplane.

As part of Columbia Metropolitan Airport's continued investment in its passengers, this project transformed the spaces surrounding the TSA security checkpoint into welcoming environments designed to make every traveler feel more comfortable before takeoff.

Working alongside aviation design firm Mead & Hunt, 1x1 Design served as the local architectural and interior design consultant, helping shape the approximately 20,500-square-foot renovation and expansion while building upon the airport's established interior design standards.

Beyond the expanded checkpoint, the project introduced a variety of thoughtfully designed passenger amenities, including business and passenger lounges, a sensory room, multi-faith prayer room, lactation room, an accessible family restroom with an adult-sized changing table, and a Service Animal Relief Area (SARA). A new outdoor porch overlooking the airfield offers travelers a comfortable place to relax while continuing one of the airport's most recognizable traditions.

Updated finishes, furnishings, lighting, and contemporary architectural elements create a terminal environment that feels both familiar and refreshed-enhancing accessibility, improving comfort, and ensuring Columbia Metropolitan Airport continues to provide an exceptional experience for travelers throughout the Midlands.
